December 6, 2018, Brgy. Sabang, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur – Today’s swell unraveled slowly and surfers feared it was going to be another layday. However, just before noon, the long and clean right-handers of Kido’s Point peeled into view. As the tide filled in, the spectators at Sabang Beach witnessed an impressive display of traditional and progressive longboarding as the Men’s and Women’s Open Longboard heats ran throughout the day.

The surfers were judged according to how well they navigated the entire length of their longboards at the most critical portions of the wave while exuding total control with style and grace. Top heat scores were posted by Moro Gandawali (11.73), Rico Dumaguin (11.60), and Jomarie Ebueza (10.10)—all of whom were from La Union— during their respective heats.

The La Union surfers exercised control over the heats throughout Round 1 and Round 2 of the Men’s Longboard Division. Of the 16 quarterfinalists, only 4 surfers were not from the Surfing Capital of the North. Danny Coldura and Mark Ailer “Carding” Catulay of Siargao snuck in second-place wins during their Round 2 heats thus securing their spots into the Quarters. Two surfers from Baler, namely defending Men’s Longboard Champion, Mark Aguila, and Jefferson Dela Torre had the advantage of seeded positions and will surf their first heats in the Quarterfinals.

In the Women’s Longboard Division, standout performances were given by Siargao’s Maricel Parajes and La Union’s Ashlee Lopez, who was the youngest competitor in the Women’s Quarterfinals. Nilbie Blancada, the defending Women’s Shortboard Champion and one of Asia’s top women shortboarders, also joined the Longboard Division in a show of solidarity for female surfers who rode longer boards. At the end of their heat, Nilbie missed her chance to advance to fellow Siargaonon Maricel and Winnie Fuller from La Union but gained the hearts of the audience.

The competition will resume at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Dec. 7, and the Shortboard Divisions for Men, Women, and Juniors will reveal who is the most versatile and adept in the changing conditions here in Cabugao. The swell is picking up fast and we’re expecting bigger and more powerful waves for Day 2.

We are only 4 days away from awarding new Filipino surfing champions so stay tuned for more PSCT action!
