Grommets Ruled Day 2 of the 21st National Siargao Surfing Cup

The second day of the 21st National Siargao Surfing Cup was one full of action which our grommets were responsible for. Two feet high waves and clean water made the day just perfect for our junior competitors.

Before moving on to Juniors Division, we witnessed in the Men’s Open Division, during the final heat, one of the outstanding performances of the category performed by four Siarganon surfers: Kent Brian, John Febra, Wemar Bonono and Jeremiah Escamillan.

Determined to make it to Round 3, the surfers did not stop catching waves. As scores were coming in, the positions were constantly changing. With three minutes remaining on the clock, Kent Brian made it to first place closing the heat with a total score of 7.84 points. It is the first time Kent Brian has joined a PSCT competition. He has been training hard for the last seven months for this, he explained. He is committed to go further. “It feels good to be competing and sharing waves with other surfers” shared Brian with a huge smile after winning.

Cloud 9 continued giving us with clean sets for the next hours. Subsequently, it was the groms turn. The first heat was opened by Gabriel Lerog, 2018 overall PSCT Champion, who took the lead since the beginning and naturally finished first place.

What makes this tour unique is the diversity of the people joining it and the love they all share for surfing. Today we saw groms competing from different parts of the country, like Ryan Javarez from Puerto Princesa, who is the Junior Champion in Palawan. “I am so happy to be here and represent my region”, explained the nine year old Ryan before his heat.

The last heat of the day was the most exciting heat of the competition so far. Benjomar Canon, winner of last year Siargao Cup, made the crowd go crazy and the judges could not believe what this sixteen years old surfer was performing. Benjomar Canon scored the two highest wave scores of this Siargao leg by combining a total heat score 13 points.

It was refreshing to witness the quality of the future surfers of the Philippines. Benladin Arjona, Lemar Delamide, Daniel Nogalo, John Carlos Noguera and Kai Alcala also gave the judges some food for thought.

The competition will resume tomorrow morning at 6am with the Quarterfinals of Juniors Division. Stay tuned as we step into the third day of the competition!
