It has been a busy fifth day of the 16th Lanuza Surfing Festival. On the 4th round, we finally saw the top PSCT surfers enter the water, welcomed by warm sunny weather and inviting 2-3 foot waves.

John Mark Tokong, Carlito Nogalo, Philmar Alipayo, Mark Escoltura, Mark Catulay and Piso Alcala, all from Siargao, sat comfortably on first position for the whole duration of their heats.

During the five hours that Men’s Open Shortboard ran, the surfers gifted the spectators with great aerial tricks, 360-degree turns and impressive maneuvers. It was the busiest day in the judging tower. The PSCT crew had to work hard to provide quick score updates  as each of the top-seeded surfers were determined to dominate their respective heats.
Two of those surfers, however, had to overcome major setbacks before they came out as victors.

Loynex Ruina, a 21-year-old local from Lanuza, was on last position during majority of his heat. However, on the very last minute, he performed a massive floater that placed him on first position. “The wave conditions made it very hard for me but I am very excited to be on the next round,” explained Ruina, still breathless. He affirmed that his toughest rivals will be Tokong, Alipayo, Sanchez and Alcala. In fact, on Round 5 he will encounter Neil Sanchez on a man-on-man duel.

Edwardo Alciso, who has had an ankle injury since the first leg in Siargao last September, surprisingly landed first place during his heat with a total heat score of 11 points. Despite his injury, he successfully qualified for Round 5. “The small waves were hard for me as I had to pump a lot, and it was painful,” expressed Alciso.

As the swell was getting smaller, only two heats of Round 5 pushed through. John Mark Tokong, current PSCT Men´s Shortboard #1 was unstoppable, executing radical maneuvers which the judges rewarded with high scores. Tokong finished with a total heat score of 11.10, landing him a spot in the Quaterfinals.

Meanwhile, in the second heat of Round 5, two of the most experienced surfers in the tour, Jefferson dela Torre and Carlito Nogalo, went head to head. It was a very tight heat that ended up with Dela Tore winning.

There are still two days left on the 16thLanuza Surfing Festival. Depending on the conditions, the judges will decide when to proceed with the Finals. Stay tuned for more updates.
